British singing sensation Susan Boyle has sailed through the semi-finals of TV variety show Britain’s Got Talent.
The 48-year-old Scottish single lady — who has become a talking-point since first |appearing on the show — was voted through by the public.
All-male dance troupe Diversity were picked by the judging panel of Piers Morgan, Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden after they were forced to choose between them and 10-year-old singer Natalie Okri.
Diversity’s body-popping and breakdancing was greeted with the words “like racing driver Jenson Button — fast, fantastic and British,” by ex-Daily Mirror editor Morgan.
Boyle’s singing talent has seen her feted by showbiz luminaries like Oprah Winfrey and ordinary members of the public ever since she sang the heart-tugging I Dreamed a Dream from hit musical Les Miserables.
This time, she sang Memory from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats.
Despite hitting a bum note at the start, the soaring strains of the familiar show tune were greeted with rapture by the crowd — and by voters back at home.
Some saw it as a paean to Elaine Paige, whose version of Memory was a top 10 hit. On her first appearance on the show, Boyle said she would like to be another Paige.
Speaking after her performance, Boyle said it felt “absolutely fantastic” to be back on stage.
The judges were equally enthusiastic. Simon Cowell told her she was “one special lady” and apologised for the panel’s knee-jerk response to her.
Boyle, from Blackburn in West Lothian, was greeted sceptically on her first appearance because of her then-unflashy appearance.
One newspaper even dubbed her “the hairy angel”.
She will join other semi-finalists — to be chosen in shows throughout this week — in a televised final on May 30.
Last night, though, it was a more soigne Boyle singing her heart out. Dressed in a fitted lace dress, her hair was tightly coiffed and her make-up immaculately applied.
“You look absolutely beautiful,” an approving Piers Morgan said.
No more hairy angel, then.
