Brad Pitt Becomes a Boxer

If Fight Club Brad Pitt were to fight Four Brothers Mark Wahlberg, who would win? Good question, and it looks like we might have an answer with The Fighter, a Paramount Pictures drama about Boston boxer -Irish- Mickey Ward and his unlikely path to become world lightweight champion.

Paramount Pictures has picked up Brad Pitt to star alongside Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter. Though it seems like the perfect setup for a fight, Wahlberg and Pitt will play half-brothers. Wahlberg will play “Irish” Mickey Ward while Pitt will play Dickey Eklund, a talented fighter who has been given credit for knocking Sugar Ray Leonard to the canvas.

Matt Damon, who has been hoping to work with Wahlberg ever since they found success on The Departed, had to be replaced by Pitt when it became apparent that Damon’s schedule couldn’t make room for any new projects.

Aronofsky will direct The Fighter and, like Wahlberg, has Boston ties. Wahlberg is already training for the gig, though he won’t appear in front of the camera until fall 2008. He should be jacked by then!

Dicky threw his gifts away on drugs and a robbery career that landed him a sentence of 10-15 years in state prison — but he kicked drugs, became a model prisoner and turned his life around. When he left jail, he became Mickey’s trainer at a time when Ward was losing fights and was ready to hang up his gloves. Together, the brothers found the spark that led to a remarkable string of victories for Ward and the world title.

Pitt can be seen this weekend in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
